Layers is an ongoing photographic project by Jakob Halldórsson, formally begun

in 2017, but rooted in ideas that go back to his years studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1988 to 1992.

During those years, Jakob became interested in photographic experimentation and in moving beyond the idea of the photograph as a record of a single moment. These early influences would later resurface in Layers, where multiple exposures bring different places, moments and visual fragments together within a single image.

What began as an exploration of photographic technique gradually evolved into a way of seeing — allowing separate realities to collide, overlap and form something new.

The images move between abstraction and recognition, order and chaos. Familiar objects and environments become fragmented and transformed, creating compositions that can feel both accidental and carefully constructed.

Rather than documenting a single moment, Layers brings several moments together. Each photograph becomes a new visual space — one that never existed in front of the camera, but emerges through the process of layering.
